About Ms. Sandberg
I love gardening! I wander through Prairie Gardens or Country Arbors and I'm like a kid in a candy shop. I want to buy everything I see. I love pairing plant colors, shapes and textures. It is like painting a picture with plants. My flower gardens are always a work in progress. There is always something new to try out.
There is also something new happening everyday in my kindergarten class. No two days are the same. I love that about my job.
Kindergarten kids want to learn. They are so proud of themselves, when they learn something new. It is a magical moment to witness a student figure out "the reading code" and begin reading for the first time. It is remarkable to see students who, at the beginning of the year, aren't sure how to write the alphabet, turn into writers of great narratives. They find joy in making and maintaining friendships. I could list a dozen more exceptional accomplishments that happen during the year. I've got the best job!
You might be thinking..."What does she mean reading books and writing narratives? Kindergarten kids don't do that!" I understand your point of view. However, the academic focus in kindergarten has grown over the past few years. Kindergarten is no longer play and rest time.
You may have heard about Common Core or the Illinois State Learning Standards. These are what the district has set for learning goals or outcomes by grade level. There are goals for each subject area. I've listed the Language Arts and Math Standards for you to review. We will talk about these throughout the year so don't let this long list cause you any concern.
